LIVING BENEFITS
LIVING BENEFITS
A rider on a life insurance policy is an optional additional provision that can be added to the policy to provide additional benefits or coverage. Some of these riders have a fee attached to the policy while others such as living benefits are included at no additional charge. There are several types of riders that can be added to a life insurance policy, including:
Accidental death rider: This rider provides an additional death benefit if the insured dies as a result of an accident.
Waiver of premium rider: This rider waives the premium payments if the insured becomes disabled and unable to work.
Critical illness rider: This rider provides a lump sum payment if the insured is diagnosed with a critical illness, such as cancer or a heart attack.
Long-term care rider: This rider provides coverage for long-term care expenses if the insured becomes unable to perform activities of daily living.
Term conversion rider: This rider allows the insured to convert a term life insurance policy to a permanent life insurance policy at a later date without having to provide additional proof of insurability. Each company has their own rules with regards to when you can convert, usually based on whichever comes first being the end of the guaranteed period or a certain age.
